There are so many beautiful aspects to the area of York, ME. We stayed at The Dockside, and we loved it!! Not only do I recommend the place, I was inspired there to write my book Grace Like Rain. From York, we drove south to Kittery, exploring the change of the terrain and then down to Portsmouth, NH, which we loved, even in a downpour (haha).
From The Dockside, there are lovely walks along the inlet, leading to the Wiggly Bridge, and a forested area with a few different trails to enjoy. The town of York is not far, and the drive along the coast is so worth the exploring adventure. Head up the coast and have a lobster lunch while watching the surfers play in the waves at Long Sands Beach, or lounge on the vast lawn in front of The Dockside and read a good book (maybe Grace Like Rain :0). Or you could explore the many shops in the village of York, or pop into a local pub or cocktail spot for a beverage and an appetizer. Most importantly, experience the area and all it has to offer.
The drive up the coast from York to Belfast is just lovely! There are so many little communities to be explored along the way. Maybe, you would like to split the journey and spend the night in one of them. We took a detour off our route to drive down into the community of Bath. What a special spot to explore. If we had more time, we would have walked the main street and taken in some shops. One thing we did do that I highly recommend is the Maine Maritime Museum. It was such a special look into the craft of shipbuilding as well as the lobster industry. They have amazing volunteers, and even a blacksmith at the original old forge who would enjoy showing you how to make the nails they used in shipbuilding back in the day. It is a great experience!
Once in Belfast, make sure you don't miss Young's Lobster Pound. What a unique adventure. Buy your lobster and a few sides right from the very place that takes in the lobster from the fishermen. Bring your own beverages and maybe even some charcuterie. Be like the locals and bring your own tablecloth and glasses for your wine. Sit on a picnic table right on the dock and watch the fishermen come in to sell their catch. Don't be afraid to start up a conversation with a local and ask them where else they recommend. We stayed at the Seascape Motel and Cottages, which were absolutely charming! And we ate breakfast at The Hoot, twice. It was so good, as well as a local favorite.
The point of travel is the experience, at least it is for us. We love the exploring, meeting new people, taking in the sights, and tasting the local foods, especially if we can't get them at home. It isn't always about having the day packed with activities, but it is about seeing the scenery, experiencing history, and seeing all that God has created for us to enjoy.
We loved the drive from Belfast to Bucksport, just beautiful. We had no idea when we were in the area that Fort Knox was there. What a wonderful find! It is so worth visiting and learning how this fort was a huge protective point for the United States during the War of 1812. So much history. We also visited the Friar's Brewhouse Taproom! A must visit. Note, it is a small space as well as busy, so plan ahead! We enjoyed the people watching, the service, and the overall experience! We only did a handful of activities, but there are literally so many, it would take weeks and weeks to do them all. Get out there and at least get a taste! Enjoy!!
