Although we only took a day to tour this iconic city, we were captured by the history, the beauty, and the moments we experienced that we will never forget. We will return to explore more thoroughly. I recommend Edinburgh Castle, the hop-on hop-off bus, the Royal Mile, exploring the city on foot, going into at least one of the Christmas shops, eating some great Scottish food, and talking to as many locals as possible...and if you are inclined, do a whiskey tasting as well. At every turn as you take pictures, you realize every shot is a moment of history!
We loved this whole area, which you can taste in just a couple of days if that is all you have. Falkirk is a small Scottish community with narrow streets, fun shops and restaurants, and quaint townhouses on cobblestoned streets. If you do visit, don’t miss the amazing Falkirk Wheel, the Kelpies, and a walk along the canal on a beautiful sunny day to experience the feel of lower Scotland. Being so close to so much history, take the drive up to Stirling and experience Stirling Castle as it stands atop the community of Stirling, overlooking the beautiful valley below. The personal tour of the castle is so worth it! Make sure you take lots of pictures as you step back deep into history. From there, take the short drive to the breathtaking monument you can see from the castle, which honors the Scottish spirit as well as the warrior William Wallace. If you are feeling very strong, walk up through Abbey Craig to the base of the monument, and then up the 480 steps inside the large, rock structure. Don’t worry, as you walk up the tight, spiral stairs, there are three open room sections that share many different aspects of Scottish history, including William Wallace, the Battle of Bannockburn, warriors that came after, and so much more. At the top, hopefully you will be blessed with a sunny day, so you can take in the spectacular valley below. The experience is more than worth it! Enjoy!!
There is so much to Scotland. Rent a car and drive the narrow roads and experience the beauty of the terrain and the history as the locals do. Watch out for the lorries on the one lane, two way roads that appear to be the width of a walking path in the U.S. Stop in Boddom, just below Peterhead and eat at the Harborview Inn. The most amazing food in an off the beaten path place. Then maybe drive up to the village of Cullen and have Cullen Skink. It sounds scary, but if you like clam chowder, you will be delighted! Drive down onto the beach in the same area and have coffee from a local hot spot, the coffee trailer that sets up shop each day. Buy a journal in Banff as I did, and now am excited to order more. The beauty of Inverness, Wick, Thurso, and Ulapool, Fort William, Ben Nevis, and so much more. All of it is worth seeing and embracing! Eat, take in a distillary or a 100 (hahah!), and meet the locals. It will enhance your life!
